History

The University of Oklahoma began a pilot recycling program of office white and green bar computer paper, in the fall of 1990, on the Norman campus.

President Richard L. Van Horn initiated a paper recycling program beginning with the spring 1991 semester. He said "As part of its educational mission, the University of Oklahoma can lead in efforts to preserve the environment and raise the level of awareness about the benefits of recycling." Individual collection containers were distributed to every department. Proceeds from the collected materials were used to offset the costs of the program including the wages of work study student employees. Any excess income was to have been designated for University scholarships.

"Keep Oklahoma Beautiful" recognized this recycling program in the fall of 1992 as the best university operated recycling program.

Until the spring 1998 semester, volunteer students and student members of the "Our Earth" organization, collected aluminum, plastic, newspaper, glass and delivered it to the nearest recycling centers.

President David L. Boren announced in February of 1998 a significant expansion of the recycling program to include the housing dorms. This expansion added the collection of aluminum, plastic, newspaper, and cardboard to the overall program.

By July of 1999, the Recycling Program had acquired a larger facility, purchased a baler and forklift, accepted a new contract for baled paper products, and accepted a new contract for baled aluminum and plastic.

In April of 2000, "Oklahoma City Earth Day" recognized the University of Oklahoma Recycling with an "Environmental Excellence" award.
